was the response I got after I asked a client at my gym how he felt about that exercise.
I find is so incredible that we can be so aware of the things that humble us and not so much so of the things that puff us up and make us behave as if we’re better than everyone else. But even more incredible is that it’s the things that humble us that can make us feel the most incredible.
Humility’s a subject that I seem to have made a hobby of studying over the past few years. I’ve enjoyed reading John Dickson’s ‘Humilitas: The Lost Key to Life, Love and Leadership‘ and C. J. Mahaney’s ‘Humility: True Greatness’. But I think the most significant insights I’ve made on the subject have been through listening to Tim Keller’s sermons, particularly ‘The Sickness Unto Death’. In it Keller reveals how much we need God’s praise, and that all alternatives to God’s praise will ultimately fail. But more importantly, it is because in Jesus God brought his punishment so that we could get his praise that we truly humbled (and truly exalted at the same time).

Later this afternoon, two of my friends will be wed. It’s not the first time I’ve witnessed a friend’s marriage, but it’s surely one of the things that changes the dynamics of our friendship. Their marriage (and this is after the wedding) becomes a blessing, not only in their lives, but ours as well as a group of friends.
Previously, I’ve said that marriage is an end point/goal of engagement, as if to say that even engagement doesn’t have to end in a marriage. This is from my understanding of Paul’s writing to the Corinthians when he says,
25 Now about virgins: I have no command from the Lord, but I give a judgment as one who by the Lord’s mercy is trustworthy. 26 Because of the present crisis, I think that it is good for you to remain as you are. 27 Are you married? Do not seek a divorce. Are you unmarried? Do not look for a wife. 28 But if you do marry, you have not sinned; and if a virgin marries, she has not sinned. But those who marry will face many troubles in this life, and I want to spare you this.
36 If anyone thinks he is acting improperly toward the virgin he is engaged to, and if she is getting along in years and he feels he ought to marry, he should do as he wants. He is not sinning. They should get married. 37 But the man who has settled the matter in his own mind, who is under no compulsion but has control over his own will, and who has made up his mind not to marry the virgin—this man also does the right thing. 38 So then, he who marries the virgin does right, but he who does not marry her does even better.[b]
Here I’ve assumed (as I’ve been taught) that virgins were mentions specifically because they were betrothed to be wed, as engaged people make a promise to be wed. Careful and better reading of this passage has allowed me to notice that Paul does not belittle marriage, but elevates singleness (in a society where heritage is important) and continues his critique of sexual sins from the previous chapter.
So a few days before the ‘mini tornado’ in Townsville, I was at a wedding there. It was a beautiful outdoors reception, which meant picnic blankets, canapés, and most importantly, a coffee cart. I’m not a big coffee drinker but I LOVE COFFEE! And they had excellent baristas. I didn’t even need a second coffee but I got one just because I didn’t really feel like introducing myself to more new people, being that the only people I really knew were the bride and the groom.
So after some time in line, I finally got my coffee and then saw the bride and groom. I walked over to get a photo.

This is not necessarily pessimistic, nor is it nihilistic. It’s realistic but with hope. Let me explain (with 2 digressions): My least favourite of the three is divorce — it’s complicated legally, financially, and emotionally. I think I’d be okay with break-ups (or at least I assume I would be, I’ve never experienced one. But I have been rejected heaps, and they are still sucky). They hurt but hopefully not as much as divorcing does. If I had to choose between the three, I would choose death: specifically, my death (although, not by suicide or murder; sacrifice, perhaps, but ideally ‘natural’). It seems easier. And being that Jesus rose from the dead, I know that I would gain eternal life with him and everyone else I love who are in Jesus.
And this brings me to my first digression.
This was a comment I made on facebook and I wanted to remember it.
Beauty includes outward appearance (not to say that you don’t have that). But it is also found in character and every other part of your being that others perceive in you. Beauty does come from what others discover when they get to know you
But the most important ‘other’ to know that you are beautiful is God. If God sees you as beautiful, then your beauty exceeds that which is commended to you by your friends and family. For God to see you as beautiful is more important than if your friends and family did.
It’s a good thing that God did see Jesus as beautiful on the cross because he gives that beauty to you as a free gift. So God doesn’t see the ugliness of your sin but sees Jesus in you because by trusting in him he put your ugly sins on himself on the cross.

I am not up to an ideal and consistent blogging pace.
It would be easier if I had concluded my testimony at the day of my conversion as if to suggest that I ‘lived happily ever after’ but that would be far from the truth. It seems like every joy-filled realisation mixed with the circumstance I found myself to enjoy them in were not ideal. And many of my brothers and sisters in Christ would probably attest to experiencing similarly difficult circumstances, or if I may ‘sufferings’, in their conversion stories.
But in order to put this chapter of my testimony in its proper perspective, I think I need to explain the Scriptural text that retrospectively inspired my actions.
God created us out of his pleasure and will. But out of pride we abandon God’s rule over us. This is a problem because we need God to keep everything good. Because of this, we are in poverty of God’s presence and things are messy, including relationships. Worse still, we deserve God’s punishment for abandoning him; that is, for him to abandon us. This is because we prostitute ourselves to anything by trusting that isn’t God. But God, out of his good pleasure and grace sent Jesus to take the punishment for our pride in abandoning God when Jesus said on the cross ‘My God, My God, Why have you forsaken me?’ That is, Jesus became poor of God’s presence on the cross. But that sacrifice was pleasing enough for the prosecution of punishment God demanded. It made God propitious. So now, those God has predestined, will believe in him and they will enjoy the praise from God that Jesus deserved. They will enjoy the love and partnership with others who believe in this Gospel of Jesus. And they will have the presence of God in their hearts, through the Holy Spirit, helping them to repent of their pride and proclaim the Gospel as their lives point to Jesus. And at the end of it all they will await the return of Jesus whereby they will be praising him in paradise.
AFTER THOUGH: I’ve avoided the word ‘sin’. It’s not for the sake of avoiding the word. But I think to use the word ‘pride’ targets at the root of all sin, and thus might be even more effective.

I still don’t understand the current catch-cry by Christians to ‘man-up’ when manning-up doesn’t necessarily lead to justification by faith in Christ alone. If the ‘man’ you’re supposed to ‘up’ into is one that is justified by Jesus, he has to realize that becoming a ‘man’ (of God, if you want to use the tag) is not, afterall, the final goal. I am afraid that those who think they are already a ‘man’ might think themselves morally superior to those that aren’t, and those that aspire to become a ‘man’ might envy those that think they are. Really, the man has to shed himself of his manliness (and his reliance on his manliness) to realise that Jesus has become the man God wants him to be. Jesus died on the cross carrying the man’s failures by God’s judgement on him. God’s verdict for Jesus is then given to the man who has faith in him. And the man turns from being a ‘man’ into a child of God, his Father.
EPILOGUE: A humble identity “in Christ” (see Ephesians 1) gives us the freedom to take responsibility for its own sake as a “good work” (cf. Ephesians 2.10). That includes, especially, taking the responsibility to bring up your family with the knowledge and the joy in the Gospel.
EDIT: Responsibility only becomes a freedom in Christ because
Our failure to be responsible is substituted by Christ’s success in being responsible, firstly to God, then to his people.
We are not enslaved to striving for success in responsibility as a means of justification from God or other non-God judges.
Thus responsibility, despite what frustrations may come before the return on Jesus, is actually eternally worthwhile and is enjoyable only because of the man who was most responsible: Jesus.
